Doctor in Neurobiology: Understanding The Functioning of the Brain

Friday, March 25, 2022

Learn what neurobiology is all about, what you’ll learn in a degree in Neurobiology, and what this postgraduate degree will enable you to do.

Does the functioning of the brain intrigue you? Are you interested in pursuing a career that enables you to understand and explain its biological processes? Neurobiology might be the perfect career path for you.

In this article, you will learn about the exciting and interesting field of Neurobiology.

What is Neurobiology?

Neurobiology is an interdisciplinary science in charge of studying the nervous system. It works closely with disciplines such as chemistry, engineering, mathematics, psychology, medicine, linguistics, philosophy and computer science with the aim of studying the brain and how it impacts on behavior and cognitive functions.

What do Neurobiologists do?

Neurobiologists are responsible for studying the behavioral, computational, medical, functional, evolutionary, molecular, and cellular aspects of the nervous system.

Neurobiologists are researchers who try to understand how the different areas of the brain affect behavior and how all of these areas are connected.

Importance of Neurobiology

The research field of neurobiology is extremely important because it contributes to the understanding of the brain, which has many applications in fields such as medicine, neuroscience, and psychology.

Neurobiologists are the ones in charge of finding how the brain works, how it ages, why it develops diseases, among many other things.

The field of Neurobiology is responsible for contributing to a better understanding of common conditions as well as its consequences, such as:

  • ADHD
  • Addiction
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Brain tumors
  • Down syndrome
  • Epilepsy
  • Immune system disorders
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Schizophrenia
  • Stroke

The research conducted by Neurobiologists help us have a deeper understanding of all these conditions and many others.

Their findings can help develop medications and strategies to prevent and treat them, which makes it a very important field of research that can contribute to the improvement of human life.

Neurobiology Put Into Practice

Thanks to research in Neurobiology, the role of the different areas of the brain have been associated with different behavioral patterns and functions.

Examples of Neurobiologists findings include:

  • Neurobiologists have identified how the frontal lobe contributes to personality, emotions, judgment, problem solving, abstract thinking, attention, and planning.
  • They’ve found that the occipital and parietal lobes are both involved in interpretation. The former hosts our visual cortices and the latter is responsible for the interpretation of language, spatial perception and visual signals.
  • The area involved with understanding language is the temporal lobe, and it also is home for the auditory cortex, which means it is key for hearing.

How to become a Neurobiologist

In order to become a Neurobiologist, you’ll need a thorough understanding of the brain and the nervous system, which you will acquire through a long academic preparation.

In general, neurobiologists have doctoral degrees. You’ll need to start with a related bachelor’s degree, for example, with a Bachelor in life sciences, such as biology, biotechnology or biochemistry. You need to look for programs that offer courses in functional neuroimaging, cognitive neuroscience, chemistry, molecular biology, among others.

After earning your bachelor’s degree, you’ll need to go on to a master’s degree or a dual program, after which you’ll earn both a master and a doctorate degree.

Once you have your doctorate degree, you’ll be ready to become a neurologist. However, don’t think your education will be done once you earn your doctorate, since this career path requires lifelong learning.
