Boost Your Employability: The Skill Students Must Develop

Thursday, October 14, 2021

There are many transferable skills students are advised to acquire during their studies to make sure they compete in the job market, but there is one skill students must develop to boost their employability. Find out what this skill is here.

Problem solving, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, motivation, responsibility, independence, leadership, teamwork, and the list goes on and on. These are some of the skills that many people, including professors, career advisors, counsellors, among others, will advise you to develop during your student years. They say these skills will give you many advantages to stand out from the crowd when looking for a job and will come in handy in the workplace.

And even though it is completely true, there is another skill that is of paramount importance you develop because it will set you off to succeed once you graduate from university, will enable you to enjoy a high level of employability, and will also allow you to achieve personal and professional goals: Lifelong learning.

What is Lifelong Learning?

Lifelong learning has been defined as the knowledge you acquire through informal education, meaning outside of educational institutions. It has mainly to do with self-initiated education, focused on personal development.

However, lifelong learning doesn’t necessarily have to do with informal education. It would be better to define it as voluntary education to achieve personal goals. This could be done either through informal or formal learning.

Why is it important to develop a mindset for lifelong learning?

Many people don’t keep polishing their knowledge and skills once they graduate university. Even though the knowledge and skills we acquire during our university education is extremely valuable and gives us the tools we need for the workplace, it can become outdated, as every field is in constant evolution and innovation. Keeping up with the latest changes is essential in the current competitive world!

Lifelong learning requires curiosity, initiative and the willingness to increase knowledge. It also requires energy, as it can be extremely tiring to handle a full-time job and constant learning, but it can be done!

Being an active learner is key after university. But this is not just something you do. You need to develop the skill of lifelong learning! This means that, during university, you need to articulate your learning strategies, acknowledge what it means to be a self-directed learner, and think about what motivates you to study. That is to say, you need to be aware of your own learning process: Focus on what works, what needs to be improved to be more effective, efficient and sustainable, what is asked from you (in school, by your boss, in your start-up, etc.), among other self-conscious aspects.

This way, once you graduate, you will have developed strategies to maintain motivation and understand that the world changes and that it needs you to keep up with these changes in order to avoid falling behind!

Competition is harsh and there are always people who are willing to put in work to outrun others! Make sure you develop lifelong learning strategies to prepare for the workforce and to keep up with the latest trends in your field!
