When we are at university, we have so many things to do that it can become overwhelming. On top of that, we may feel like we have so much to do that we don’t have time to enjoy our time doing the things we love, which will make us feel frustrated.

For that reason, it is important to manage our time effectively, which will help us find a balance between our studies, the things we enjoy doing, and our health.

Tips to Help You Balance Your Life at University

1. Take care of yourself

Our health should always be the most important thing. Make sure you take care of your health while you are at university, as many people put it in a second place of priority. However, it is not possible to study effectively when we are not healthy and happy.

You need to make sure you give yourself the time to enjoy the good times, meet with friends and family, ask for help if you need it. That is to say, acknowledging your feelings will go a long way in staying healthy and, in turn, studying in a productive way.

2. Control your time

Procrastinating when we have plenty of time is very common. However, as the upcoming deadlines come nearer and nearer, we find out we are way behind.

For this reason, it is important to take control of your time and find out we are the ones in charge of our decisions and studies. We need to make wise decisions on how to spend our time to make sure we are able to do everything we are supposed to do for university as well as enjoy our time. 

3. Mix up study techniques and resources

University isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Each student needs to find out what works best for themselves and make sure they stick to that. Whether it is watching tutorials, reading textbooks, listening to podcasts, rereading notes from class, drawing maps, among other things, each student needs to figure out what methods and approaches to studying suits them best, as plain reading is not helpful for everyone.

4. Find the time of day you are most productive

It is almost impossible to maintain a high level of productivity and concentration during the whole day. Each one of us are more productive in certain times of the day, which is why it is important to pay attention to our studying patterns and figure out when we are most productive. This way, we will be able to schedule our study sessions and the rest of our activities according to what works best for us.

5. Take breaks

As previously mentioned, maintaining a high level of concentration during all day is impossible, and the same occurs for long periods of time. It is essential that we give ourselves some time to relax in between studying not only to be able to study with a fresher mind, but also to stay healthy. Our mind and bodies need rest, and we should respect that.

6. Get rid of distractions when you are studying

Our phones are proven to be the biggest source of distraction, as there are many different things we can do with them. Watching a series, scrolling through social media, and chatting with friends might be more interesting than studying, but we must study. For that reason, turning our phone off during our study sessions or at least turning our notifications off will be extremely helpful.

7. Study with friends

Studying alone works best for some people, as they find it easier to concentrate on their studying instead of talking to each other. However, once in a while, it is quite useful to study with our classmates because they can give us a different insight into the topics that may help us understand it better.

University can be an overwhelming process but it can be easier to go through it when we find a balance between our studies, our social life and our health. Make sure you take care of yourself, give yourself time to meet with friends and do things you enjoy, and take enough time to study as well.
