Is Architecture a Hard Degree?

Thursday, April 20, 2023

Architecture is said to be one of the most difficult degrees to pursue. This can be daunting for some people who want to follow this career path. If you are one of them, keep reading to find out whether architecture is a hard degree or not.

We can all agree that there is no degree that is easy to obtain, they all have their difficulties but we should not get discouraged. Architecture might be more difficult than any other degree since it involves creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, design skills, and more. Besides, it covers a wide range of other disciplines such as art, science, history, geography, and philosophy. The difficulty of this degree is subjective and it depends on every individual who wants to study for it. If you want to know why many people think that architecture is a hard degree, you should keep on reading this article.

Why is it Hard?

There are many reasons why architecture is said to be a difficult degree. Although it is not like that for everyone.

First of all, most people think it is a hard degree because it covers several disciplines. To be a professional architect, you should learn some basic knowledge from other disciplines such as history, math, philosophy, geography, art, physics, and many more. During the first years of university, you will cover some of these disciplines and relate them to architecture.

Secondly, we could say it is a difficult qualification since it is a time-consuming degree. Of course, and like many other degrees, architecture takes a lot of time and effort. Not only should you spend time on campus, but you also have to spend a lot of time at home making designs that you should hand in on time.

Then, it requires really deep thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Although these skills can be grown year by year, it is necessary to start the career by understanding a little bit of every important point in the program. This requires a lot of critical thinking (which can also be learned) and problem-solving skills.

Fourthly, it is one of the most expensive professions. Apart from the tuition cost, this career demands a lot of extra material to build scale models, and also several reading materials have to be bought.

Lastly, it is probable that you will have to work a lot with other classmates. For some people, this is an advantage. But there are some others who prefer to work alone instead of working in teams

All of these are some of the reasons why people think architecture is a hard degree. However, remember that this idea is subjective: not everybody believes it is hard. For some people, the number of disciplines and time spent, the skills required, the cost of it, and the team working is not a problem.
