One of the many different interior design styles is bohemian. It has its own characteristics and features that make it unique. In this article, we will explain what is bohemian interior design and which are its more relevant characteristics.



Interior design can be defined as the process of designing or creating a design for a specific room’s interior. Within this discipline, there are various styles that can be found and depend on the likes and dislikes of people. Bohemian or Boho style is one of them and it is different from all the other interior design styles. It can be easily recognized and distinguished. Different from minimalism, the bohemian style tries to focus on expression and the use of many textures and colors. Some History 


The bohemian style began in the 19th century in Paris, France. It all started with some artists, writers, and performers who preferred creativity over money and thought that art was more important. However, not everybody thought that bohemianism was a good idea. Catholics and protestant churches rejected this idea. During the 1960s, hippies made use of bohemianism, they had jobs that were not regular and lived free lives.

There are three different factors that contributed to the emergence of bohemian interior design:

  • Romans lifestyle
  • Bohemianism during the 19th century
  • Hippie movement during the 1960s.


What is Bohemian Interior Design? 


Each style has its characteristics and features that distinguish them from other interior design styles. You can easily recognize and identify certain styles when you come into a room. Bohemian style has lots of textures, colors, and patterns. For those who want to enjoy a room full of joy and culture, bohemianism is the right choice. Here are some other important characteristics: 

  • many different patterns along the whole room
  • saturated colors help achieve the boho look 
  • addition of layers and mixtures to the room 
  • important ornaments with a history all around the room 
  • handmade crafts are also important 
  • natural materials are used
  • use of plants 
  • vintage items help intensify the style
  • culture is a priority.


The different characteristics that create a bohemian interior design style might vary according to the likes and dislikes of the client. But we can all agree that this style includes various colors, patterns, textures, ornaments, vintage decorations, plants, and flowers. As we mentioned before, it is really different from minimalism, where the style is so much more sophisticated and empty.
