Consider a Career in Education
Now it's the best time to become a teacher and a leader in the Education field, since close to one million jobs will be created in the next few years only in the public sector.
In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projections, employment in education, training, and library occupations will grow 10% from 2020 to 2030.
During the next decade at least 920,500 new jobs in education will be added.
Student enrollment is projected to increase; so postsecondary teachers and preschool, elementary, and secondary school teachers are in more demand than ever.
However, there is a long way to go to put these jobs in place. The BLS states that in the meantime these fields like Education, training, and library occupations are affected by state and local budgets, and budgetary restrictions may limit employment growth.

“There’s more money in education than ever before," he said. "Let’s use this disruption to raise the bar … Every state leader has American Rescue Plan (Act) dollars right now to create or expand career and college pathways and take steps to transform education in their communities. The president’s budget also includes over $200 million for career-connected learning.”, explained U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in an article from the Newport Daily News.
Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, more educators are leaving the profession or retiring early according to the National Education Association (NEA).
The recent severe staff shortages that have afflicted school systems around the nation have put an unprecedented amount of burden on classroom teachers and other school workers, who are already exhausted.
According to NEA President Becky Pringle, these shortages are not new, but the epidemic has made the situation worse and students are now suffering as a result.
"It is preventing educators from giving their students the one-on-one attention they need. It is forcing them to give up their class planning and lunch time to fill in for colleagues who are out due to COVID," Pringle explains. "And, it is preventing students from getting the mental health support needed."
“This is a five-alarm crisis," she continued. "If we’re serious about getting every child the support they need to thrive, our elected leaders across the nation need to address this crisis now."
Here are a few solutions to stop the educator shortage.
When asked about potential ways to address the issue, respondents pointed out that besides needing higher salaries, providing additional mental support for students, and less paperwork, the measure that will help resolve the situation is hiring more teachers.
"Pay is a big factor, but we also need multiple models of support for educators," says Sobia Sheikh, a high school math teacher in Everett, Washington, "including time to plan, collaborate with colleagues, and build relationships with our students."
