Bangor Theological Seminary

Located in Bangor, Maine, and Portland, Maine, Bangor Theological Seminary was an ecumenical seminary, founded in 1814, in the Congregational tradition of the United Church of Christ. It was the only accredited graduate school of religion in Northern New England.

The seminary had campuses in Bangor and Portland, Maine. Its primary mission was preparation for Christian ministry (now general theological education).

Graduate programs have included the Master of Divinity, Master of Arts and Doctor of Ministry degrees. The school was accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and Maine Board of Education. Bangor Theological Seminary was an official Open and affirming seminary.

The school closed with its final Commencement Service on June 22, 2013.

A long and meaningful chapter in the history of Bangor Theological Seminary closed with its final Commencement Service on June 22, 2013, even as a new chapter is being written. Though BTS will no longer offer graduate degrees, our 199 year legacy of providing exceptional theological education and formation of persons responding to a call to ministry will be preserved through the mission of our spiritual successor, The BTS Center. This is a time of significant change in the life of the Church, and for Bangor Theological Seminary, but the historic mission of BTS — to equip and support women and men for leadership roles in faith communities — will continue to be at the heart of all our activities as we begin our third century of service.

We are profoundly grateful for all who have been our devoted companions in active service and support of graduate theological education in northern New England for almost two hundred years. May God bless and consecrate the work that we have done, and prosper the vision of how the BTS legacy and an educational mission will be preserved into a third century.
