Doctor of Philosophy in Adult Development and Aging

The Doctor of Philosophy in Adult Development and Aging in Health Professions is offered by Cleveland State University.

The Ph.D. program in Adult Development and Aging is offered jointly by Cleveland State University and the University of Akron. The purpose of the program is to train researchers who

  1. Will become expert in the subject of cognitive and behavioral functioning in adulthood and aging
  2. Will convey existing knowledge through teaching and generate new knowledge through empirical investigation and analysis
  3. Will become involved with their communities in addressing issues of pressing social importance.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to teach, carry out research, and serve as community consultants on the cognitive, motor, perceptual, social emotional, and behavioral functioning of adults throughout their life span.

Graduates from the program will be competitive for faculty positions in teaching and research at 4-year and 2-year institutions of higher education and for research positions in research institutes, including applied health and rehabilitative centers and facilities serving the aging population.

Requirements

Students will be required to take courses at both Cleveland State University and the University of Akron. Enrollment and successful completion of the following courses will be required:
  • PSY 601 - Quantitative and Computer Methods l
  • PSY 602 - Quantitative & Computer Methods II
  • PSY 701 - Multivariate Statistics
  • PSY 702 - Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling
  • PSY 710 - Psychology of Adult Development & Aging
  • PSY 711 - Health Psychology in Later Life
  • PSY 712 - Mental Health in Aging
  • PSY 713 - Sensorimotor Processes in Adulthood
  • PSY 714 - Neuropsychology of Aging
  • PSY 715 - Social & Emotional Development in Later Life
  • PSY 716 - Cognitive Aging
  • PSY 699 - Research and Thesis (variable credit) (8 hours)
  • PSY 899 - Dissertation (8 hours)
At least 34 credit hours of the following courses: 
PSY 703 - Multilevel Linear Modeling ; PSY 720 - Independent Reading & Research ;PSY 721 - Special Topics in Psychology: Adult Development & Aging ; PSY 722 - Special Problems in Psychology: Adult Development & Aging ; PSY 899 - Dissertation 

Students who are completing a Master's Thesis register for Thesis credits during their second year.  An M.A. is awarded upon successful completion of 48 hours of study in the doctoral program, including the thesis.  Graduate students also are required to successfully pass the written and oral portions of the Ph.D. Candidacy Examination after their third year of coursework.  Once students have successfully completed their Candidacy Examination they are able to begin their dissertation project. Ph.D. students must complete at least 94 credit hours of graduate study before being eligible for graduation.
