It was founded in 1887 by Joseph Cataldo, an Italian-born Jesuit priest and missionary, and is one of the 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). 

Gonzaga University's liberal arts tradition lies in its core curriculum. This core curriuclum integrates philosophy, religious studies, mathematics, literature, natural and social sciences, and extensive writing in each major discipline.
