Hampshire College is a private liberal arts located in Amherst, Massachusetts. It first opened in 1970 as an experiment in alternative education, in association with four other colleges in the same Pioneer Valley--Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The schools have been known together as the Five Colleges or the Five College Consortium.
Hampshire College is well-known for its alternative curriculum, self-directed academic concentrations, progressive politics, focus on portfolios rather than distribution requirements, and its reliance on narrative evaluations instead of grades and GPAs. 65% of alumni have at least one graduate degree and a quarter have founded their own businesses or organizations.
Alumni include recipients of the Pulitzer Prize; the National Humanities Medal; Emmy, Academy, Peabody, Tony and Grammy Awards; and MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships. The college is also among the top producers of Fulbright Students and of alumni who go on to earn a doctorate degree.
Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts is one of the most innovative colleges in the country. It requires students to pursue their passions by designing their own programs of study and recruiting a faculty committee to guide them on a rigorous path of intellectual discovery. Through active, engaged learning, students become creators of knowledge and are encouraged to make connections between their academic work and the wider world.
Students receive detailed narrative evaluations from faculty mentors, rather than grades.
Hampshire’s success can be measured in the mainstreaming of many of its experimental ideas in education, and in its roster of alumni achievement: Oscar and Emmy winners, best-selling authors, scientists, historians, Peabody awardees, MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipients, and more Ph.D. candidates than any other school of its size.
