New Proposal: Student Debt Cancellation For Front-Line Medical Workers

Thursday, May 7, 2020

College student loan debt cancellation is proposed for front-line medical workers who have been putting their lives at risk every day as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

House Representative Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat, has introduced a bill that forgives student debt for a wide range of front-line medical workers who are treating COVID-19 patients. These important front-line workers include doctors, nurses, lab technicians, medical students and more.

Maloney has said that she supports broader proposals to cancel student debt for more borrowers. “But we’re not looking at [that] bigger issue right now,” she said. Instead, while House Democrats work on their proposal for the upcoming coronavirus relief package, Maloney said she was focusing on canceling debt for at least the front-line medical workers. “I think there’s a shot,” shared Maloney. “We may be able to pass this piece of it now.”

Medical workers, putting their lives in danger every day as they treat patients with the novel coronavirus, deserve the relief. “It’s the least we [can] do.”

Maloney has not yet received commitment from House leaders to include the idea in the proposal. Her bill would have no limit on the amount of debt canceled.

Eileen Sullivan-Marx, dean of New York University (NYU)’s Rory Meyers College of Nursing and president of the American Academy of Nursing, said past students have told her student loan forgiveness would be a great relief because they would not pass the debt onto their families should they die after contracting the virus.
