Northeastern University dismisses 11 students who violated social distance rules by gathering in a hotel room and will not refund tuition.

Northeastern University, a top research university located in Boston, Massachusetts, dismisses 11 undergraduate students at the start of the Fall semester for violating campus social distancing guidelines; the students were discovered in the same hotel room.

Northeastern notified the 11 students and their parents that they had 24 hours to leave its Boston campus. The university also ordered the students to undergo COVID-19 tests. Any student who tested positive would then be moved into isolated wellness housing as opposed to sent directly home, to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Northeastern has shared that the 11 students, whose names have not been released, were part of a first-year international experience program called N.U.in. They were among a group of more than 800 students housed in two-person rooms in the Westin Hotel, located near the campus.

Northeastern University’s senior vice chancellor for student affairs, Madeleine Estabrook, shared. “Northeastern and its community of students, faculty and staff take violations of health and safety protocols very seriously. Cooperation and compliance with public health guidelines is absolutely essential.”

“Testing for negative COVID-19 is not enough. We must practice all of the public health guidelines in order to keep ourselves and the community healthy. Together, we can keep each other safe, but it will require everyone’s consistent cooperation.”

According to the university, N.U.in program students had been formally notified multiple times during the past week that it was absolutely necessary to practice physical distancing, avoid crowds and wear masks when around others. Students were required to acknowledged that they had reviewed the program safety handbook, which included COVID-19 requirements.

The Guide to Residence Hall Living, according to guidelines from both Northeastern University and the state of Massachusetts, states that as long as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, there will be “no guests, visitors, or additional occupants allowed in residential assigned bed spaces during this time; this includes neighbors within [the] residential building.”

Estabrook, in a letter to students, shared that “students who host an unsafe (no masks and witho healthy distancing) gathering, social or party, either on or off-campus can expect suspension. Students who attend an unsafe gathering, social or party, either on or off-campus, can expect suspension.”

Officials shared that staff members found the 11 students crowded into a single hotel room on Wednesday night. Officials also shared that students would not be reimbursed for tuition and fees for the fall semester.
