Description

The Department of Art and Art History is a comprehensive and diverse center for the study of visual art and art history, and the only master’s degree granting program in the visual arts in the region. Comprised of nine distinct but interrelated media programs as well as an art history program that specializes in the art of Asia and Hawai‘i/Pacific, the department combines seasoned faculty expertise with state-of-the-art facilities.

The BFA Degree is designed for those students who desire a focused preparation in the visual arts or who intend to pursue an advanced degree or careers in art and design. Areas of specialization include ceramics, drawing, electronic arts, fiber, glass, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

Requirements

This degree requires

  • 63 credits
  • 12 credits of Studio and Art History core courses (Art 113, 116, 175 and 176), Art 302 (Theory and Criticism of Art), 21 credits of studio courses in a chosen media-specific program
  • 12 credits of upper level Art History courses
  • 15 credits of art electives
Students are admitted into the BFA degree program through a portfolio review held annually. It is recommended that students apply for the review the year/semester prior to graduation. Only those who are admitted can enroll in ART 410 - BFA Capstone Seminar, held every Spring. In this seminar students produce new work and collaborate in organizing the annual BFA exhibition.

In addition to Lab Fees students should anticipate additional costs for material to produce their artwork and the BFA exhibition (i.e. promotion, signage, reception, documentation, etc.)
