Description
Our biomedical engineers apply engineering methods and principles, adapting technology to solve problems in the life sciences and medicine in order to improve and save lives. Our students learn how to design and develop medical equipment and instrumentation for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and health problems as well as for use in biological research.
Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary area in which engineering techniques are applied to problem solving in the life sciences and medicine. Biomedical engineers design medical instruments for diagnosis and the treatment of various diseases as well as for research in biology. Examples of instruments for diagnosis include electrocardiographs, electroencephalographs, automatic blood analyzers, and medical imaging systems such as X-ray imaging, radio-nuclide imaging, ultrasound imaging, computer-assisted tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in biomedical engineering is offered by the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering (ECBE), and is open to qualified students under the New England Regional Student Program. The Biomedical Engineering Program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, Inc.
